The Reolink CX820 belongs on a no-subscription shortlist when you are willing to install an Ethernet cable and want continuously powered local recording. It is a PoE turret camera for a wired setup, not a cellular camera that needs a SIM plan. Its ongoing-cost question is about the recording destination and installation, rather than mobile data service.

Two ways to supply power

The official specifications allow 802.3af, 48 V PoE or a 12 V, 1 A DC supply. PoE carries power and data over the Ethernet connection when paired with appropriate equipment. Using DC power does not give the CX820 Wi-Fi; the camera still needs its wired network connection.

Before buying, trace the full route from the router or switch to the mounting point. Decide whether you already have suitable PoE equipment, will add a compatible injector or switch, or will use DC power. Include the cable, mounting work and connection protection in the budget. Check the exact offer's contents instead of assuming that a camera-only purchase includes all of those pieces.

This planning effort is worthwhile when the position is permanent and accessible for installation. It is less attractive when you cannot run a cable, must frequently move the camera, or want a quick battery installation without new wiring.

You do not have to start with an NVR

The CX820 supports microSD local storage up to 512 GB, with NVR and FTP recording alternatives. Reolink's storage compatibility table provides the capacity context, while its subscription guidance explains that recording does not require a cloud plan.

For one camera, a compatible card may be the simplest recording destination. For several cameras, consider whether centralized footage is easier for the person who will actually review it. The NVR is a hardware investment, not a monthly recording requirement. Choose it because you need the storage arrangement or management workflow, rather than because the camera uses PoE.

A recording card is also not an archive. Decide how you will export an incident, where the saved copy will live, and who is responsible for doing that before old footage is overwritten. We do not assign a retention-day guarantee because capacity alone cannot establish it.

Free detection and continuous video solve different problems

The manufacturer lists person, vehicle and animal detection without a subscription, plus push and email alerts and a playback timeline with event filters. Recording can be motion-triggered, scheduled or continuous 24/7. Detection, playback and recording modes

Alerts help you notice an event; continuous footage can help you reconstruct the period around it. Keep those roles separate when deciding settings. A household that checks deliveries may prefer to begin with events, while someone investigating activity along a driveway may value a continuous timeline. Neither choice justifies assuming perfect detection or that every remote app function will survive a network outage.

Night viewing also needs realistic expectations. The CX820 uses its low-light colour imaging and warm lighting arrangement; the specifications list no infrared illuminator. Evaluate the location's lighting instead of expecting detailed colour video in every completely dark setting. Camera and lighting specifications

The nearby Wi-Fi alternative

The Lumus Pro is worth comparing if you have an outlet at the camera but do not want to route Ethernet. Both offer local recording and object detection, but the installation constraints differ. Compare the complete wired setup against the complete outlet-and-Wi-Fi setup rather than only comparing camera prices.

The CX820 is a strong fit for a deliberate wired installation with local footage and a clear storage plan. It is a weak fit for a wire-free location or a buyer who has not budgeted for the power and network route. This is a manufacturer-document assessment; low-light quality, detection accuracy and network reliability have not been tested firsthand.
