The eufy Video Doorbell E340 is worth considering when you want to review front-door events without adding a recording subscription or immediately buying a storage hub. Its two cameras help cover the visitor and the area where a delivery may be left. The more important buying question is whether its built-in storage and event-based recording match what you need to recover later.
What you can use without a recording plan
The E340 has 8 GB of onboard local storage and can operate without a HomeBase. eufy's E340 overview describes notifications, recorded footage and playback without an ongoing subscription. That makes the standalone route straightforward: install the doorbell, connect it, and use its local event history.
Local storage has a practical limit. Once older footage is overwritten, a subscription-free camera cannot reconstruct it. If an incident matters, save the clip promptly rather than treating the rolling history as an archive. How much history you need depends on how often the door is busy and how long you usually wait before checking it; a fixed number of days would be misleading.
Basic detection and alerts should also be separated from every enhanced AI feature sold elsewhere in the ecosystem. The product page describes detection features, but that is not a promise that all future cloud or premium services will be free.
Choose the power arrangement before the bundle
The doorbell can run from its removable battery or suitable existing doorbell wiring. eufy specifies 8–24 V and more than 10 VA for the wired arrangement, and the battery still needs to be installed. Wiring replenishes that battery; it does not turn this model into a different continuously recording camera. Check the actual transformer rating before choosing a bundle on the assumption that existing wiring will work. Installation conditions
A battery setup is attractive when you cannot modify the wiring, but you must remain able to remove and recharge the battery. Consider whether the mounting position is accessible and whether someone will handle charging when you are away. Wired power is more convenient when compatible wiring already exists, but electrical work and any needed transformer belong in the complete installation budget.
An E340 plus Chime or extra-battery offer is still the same doorbell model. Decide whether you need a separate indoor sounder, a spare battery, or neither. Verify the included chime version and battery quantity on the exact offer; an accessory photograph is not enough to establish what ships.
When a HomeBase is worth adding
A HomeBase is an optional expansion rather than the entry ticket for basic local recording. It can move you toward a larger, centralized storage arrangement. Use eufy's model-specific compatibility guide before combining an existing hub with the doorbell.
Buying the hub makes most sense when storage or a wider camera system is already a requirement. For a single entrance and routine event checks, begin by deciding whether the standalone history is enough. For several cameras, decide how you want to organize and preserve footage across the property. The hub and any storage drive are hardware costs even when the recording route has no monthly bill.
Who should choose a different model?
Choose another approach if you need uninterrupted video of everything outside the door. We have not verified continuous 24/7 recording for the Video Doorbell E340, and the similarly named Floodlight E340 should not be used as evidence for it. The Video Doorbell C31 offers a documented continuous-recording route under specific hardwired conditions, making it a relevant alternative when that requirement outweighs the E340's two-camera layout.
Also distinguish no subscription from no cloud use. eufy says thumbnail notifications temporarily send preview images to the cloud; optional cloud backup is a separate service. If that distinction matters to your household, review those settings before enabling image-rich alerts.
The E340's clearest fit is a household that wants convenient front-door event review, values delivery-area coverage, and accepts a finite local history. This assessment is based on manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test.
