The eufy Video Doorbell C31 is a useful candidate when your first question is what happens between detected events. It has a documented path to continuous recording, but that path requires a particular wired installation. A household choosing battery power should evaluate it as an event-recording doorbell, without assuming that the same recording features apply in both modes.
This article covers the Video Doorbell C31, model T8223. eufy also sells other products with C31 in their name; their camera features and power arrangements are not interchangeable.
The basic local setup
The standalone doorbell records to a microSD card of up to 128 GB, purchased separately. A HomeBase S380 is an optional storage expansion, so you do not need to buy a hub just to establish the doorbell's basic local recording route. The C31 product page describes these options, and eufy's recording support confirms that cloud backup is not a required recording subscription.
Budget for the card before comparing doorbell prices. Choose its capacity according to your recording mode and how long you need to retain footage, rather than assuming the largest supported card is supplied. Whatever size you choose, save important clips before the local history rolls over. Local recording removes a recurring storage bill; it does not create a permanent evidence archive.
Basic human and motion detection and phone notifications form the core setup. Optional cloud backup and enhanced ecosystem services should be evaluated separately. Thumbnail previews can temporarily use cloud storage, so the local recording route does not mean that every enabled app feature stays entirely on the device.
Continuous recording has installation conditions
For 24/7 recording and five-second pre-recording, eufy specifies a 16–24 V, 30 VA transformer and requires bypassing the existing mechanical chime. That is a material installation choice, not a minor detail hidden behind the word “wired.” Check both the transformer and the household's expectations about the old indoor chime before ordering. C31 wiring requirements
If suitable wiring is already present, continuous recording can be useful when you want to inspect activity that did not trigger an alert. If the transformer or chime arrangement must change, include that work and an appropriate notification arrangement in the full budget. Do not compare a bare doorbell price with another product's complete installed configuration.
The removable 6,500 mAh battery provides another installation route, but it does not establish continuous recording. Battery mode suits a location where wiring changes are impractical and event clips answer the main question. It also creates a charging task. Make sure the mounted doorbell remains accessible and that the household has a plan for recharging it.
C31 or E340?
The decision is clearer when you start with the footage you need. The E340 has a two-camera layout and onboard storage, which may be attractive for checking visitors and deliveries without first adding a card. The C31's stronger distinction is its specified hardwired continuous-recording route.
For occasional visitor checks, compare the viewing layout, installation effort and complete accessory cost. For reconstructing a sequence of activity outside the door, first establish whether you can meet the C31's wiring requirements. If you cannot, do not pay for the expectation of continuous footage that your installation will not support.
Check hub-dependent expectations separately
A HomeBase can be useful when the doorbell becomes part of a larger local-storage system. That does not mean every app or calling feature behaves identically in standalone and hub modes. The official C31 FAQ still contains a future-looking HomeBase video-call statement without enough information to establish that the feature has been delivered. If video calling through that configuration is essential, obtain current confirmation before making it the reason to buy.
The C31 is most compelling when the household wants local history and can make a deliberate choice between simple battery installation and the specified wired recording setup. It is a poor fit for someone who expects battery operation to provide uninterrupted footage or assumes the existing mechanical chime will remain part of the continuous-recording configuration. This is manufacturer-document research, not a hands-on review.
