Choose T1 when you already have a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub and want another contact sensor in that setup. Choose P2 when you specifically want a Matter-over-Thread sensor for a supported controller and Thread network. Buying the sensor before checking those controller roles is the easy mistake. The protocol choice should follow the home you actually have.

Which controller does each sensor need?

What changes in daily use

T1's official specifications identify Zigbee 3.0. The current US listing says it requires a separately sold Aqara hub and is not compatible with other brands' hubs. A Zigbee label on an unrelated controller is therefore not enough evidence that this particular sensor will join it.

P2 is documented as a Matter-over-Thread product. Aqara requires both Matter-controller and Thread-border-router functionality for the selected platform. A device advertised merely as a smart-home hub does not necessarily supply both roles.

For an established Aqara Zigbee household, T1 keeps the purchasing decision simple: check that the existing hub supports the exact sensor. For a household already using the required Matter and Thread equipment, P2 can fit that route without making the T1-specific Aqara Zigbee requirement part of the plan.

Does changing protocol improve the door-opening task?

P2 explicitly reports the opening and closing status of doors, windows and drawers. The useful outcome is an automation or notification based on that state, rather than a protocol badge for its own sake.

Before choosing, write a concrete rule such as “when this door opens, turn on the hallway light.” Confirm that the intended controller supports the sensor state and action you need. Aqara warns that available automation conditions can vary across ecosystems.

We would not replace an existing working contact sensor simply because another protocol is newer. If the current system already performs the required rule reliably, changing the radio arrangement adds pairing and automation work. P2 makes more sense when it solves a real compatibility requirement or fits the network you are building now.

What should you check on the actual door frame?

T1's specification lists a maximum detection distance of 22 mm and a sensor body of 41 × 22 × 11 mm (1.61 × 0.87 × 0.43 in). Those details help check the intended mounting position; they are not a promise that every irregular frame or mounting surface will work identically.

T1's box includes a sensor with sticker and magnet. P2 also uses adhesive mounting and includes an alternative thin magnet plate for placement flexibility. Choose the position with the door closed, then make sure both parts can remain aligned through normal use.

Do that physical check before ordering a whole set. A compatible network cannot compensate for a placement that fails to produce a dependable state change. Test the selected position through opening, closing and the actual automation before treating the installation as finished.

Will one need fewer battery changes?

The documented battery types differ: T1 uses CR1632, while P2 uses a CR123A battery. Keep the correct replacement type in your maintenance notes rather than assuming both Aqara contact sensors use the same cell.

We do not have a controlled battery-life comparison that would justify declaring one the longer-lasting choice in your setup. Aqara explicitly says P2 battery life depends on the connected border router and Matter app.

For a sensor above a difficult-to-reach window, replacement access deserves attention during installation. For a readily accessible door, using the controller already present may matter more than a broad marketing endurance claim. Choose on the documented setup and battery requirement, not an invented universal service interval.

How should you compare the total purchase?

The P2 single-sensor manufacturer reference is $29.99 USD. The checked White T1 single-pack US retail reference is $18.99; controller equipment is not included in either sensor-only comparison. Final tax, delivery and checkout offers can differ between sellers.

For someone with the required Aqara hub already installed, T1 is our first route to check. For someone with the required Matter and Thread roles already working, P2 is the more relevant route. If neither setup exists, compare the complete supported installation rather than the sensor box alone.

For an existing owner, keep a working system unless the next desired automation or platform requires a change. For a new buyer, verify controller compatibility first, then mounting and battery access. That order avoids buying an inexpensive sensor that creates an unexpected second hardware purchase.

Which prices are being compared?

These are separate listed hardware reference prices from Amazon US listing sold by AqaraDirect and Aqara US store. The displayed difference is not a delivered checkout saving; tax, shipping, promotions and package details can differ.

Choose T1 for an existing Aqara Zigbee setup

The exact sensor is supported by the Aqara hub already in use, and the required contact-triggered automation is available there. Check the mounting position and replacement battery access.

Choose P2 for a supported Matter and Thread setup

The intended platform already has the required controller and border-router roles, or you have deliberately budgeted them. Confirm that the desired automation condition is supported by that platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can T1 join any Zigbee hub?

The current US listing explicitly requires an Aqara hub and says other brands’ hubs are not compatible. Treat exact hub support as a buying requirement; check the exact supported hub model before ordering, even when another hub uses the same radio protocol.

Does P2 work with only a phone?

Aqara specifies Matter-controller and Thread-border-router functionality for the supported smart-home setup. A phone running an app is not a substitute for checking those roles. Confirm the actual platform equipment before ordering the sensor.

Are the batteries interchangeable?

The published battery types differ between these models. Use the specified replacement for the exact sensor and keep it recorded with the installation. This difference does not by itself prove a longer real-world interval between changes.

Should I replace T1 sensors with P2?

Only if a specific platform or automation goal requires the new route. If an existing T1 setup already performs the needed door-state task, replacing sensors creates setup work without necessarily improving the everyday outcome.
